Itinerary

The 2-Day Inca Trail is a condensed and highly rewarding version of the classic trek, including an overnight hotel stay in Aguas Calientes:

• Day 1: Cusco - Km 104 - Wiñaywayna - Sun Gate - Aguas Calientes (approx. 12 km hike)
  • Very early pick-up from your hotel in Cusco and transfer to Ollantaytambo train station.
  • Train journey to Km 104 (Chachabamba), the starting point of the trek.
  • Visit to the archaeological site of Chachabamba and uphill hike to Wiñaywayna (2,650 m.a.s.l.).
  • Exploration of the impressive terraces and fountains of Wiñaywayna.
  • Continuation along the trail to the Sun Gate (Intipunku, 2,720 m.a.s.l.) for the first view of Machu Picchu.
  • Descent to Machu Picchu for photos from outside and then bus to Aguas Calientes.
  • Dinner and overnight at a hotel in Aguas Calientes.
• Day 2: Aguas Calientes - Machu Picchu - Cusco (Machu Picchu Tour + Return Journey)
  • Early breakfast at the hotel.
  • Bus ride up to Machu Picchu (approx. 5:30 AM).
  • Guided tour of 2 to 2.5 hours through the Machu Picchu citadel.
  • Free time to explore on your own.
  • Bus descent to Aguas Calientes.
  • Lunch (not included) and free time in Aguas Calientes.
  • Return train to Ollantaytambo or Poroy.
  • Bus transfer from the station back to your hotel in Cusco.

Recommendations (What to bring?):

• Original passport (the same one used for booking) and ISIC student card (if applicable).
• Small backpack (20-30 liters) for the hike and a larger backpack for the night in Aguas Calientes (if you prefer not to carry everything in the small backpack).
• Layered clothing: quick-drying shirts, trekking pants, warm jackets, windbreaker, rain jacket/poncho.
• Comfortable and sturdy trekking shoes (already broken in).
• Sun hat, wool hat, gloves.
• Water (reusable water bottle or Camelbak recommended) and water purification tablets.
• Energy snacks (cereal bars, dried fruit, chocolate).
• Sunscreen, sunglasses, and insect repellent.
• Headlamp with extra batteries.
• Personal hygiene items.
• Cash (Peruvian soles) for additional expenses and tips.
• Trekking poles with rubber tips (optional).

Prices are indicative and can vary significantly depending on the season, the hotel category in Aguas Calientes, the type and schedule of train tickets, and the booking lead time. Inca Trail permits (even for this 2-day section) are limited and sell out quickly, so it is recommended to book several months in advance.
